Melody Maker Feature: Is This the Next Rock Martyr in the Making?
Why must we tell the story of a martyr about a band where no one has died yet?
Thom Yorke hasn't died, yet he becomes an article. When Kurt Cobain died, didn't we feel relief rather than sadness? Relief that the story was complete. Zizek in coma has always refused that perverted relief. They never show their faces. They never give real names. They are a generation that listened to 90s music in real time, but their activity began in 2009. A collection of anonymous wrecks gathered from various bands. That's why their name is honest — the philosopher Slavoj Zizek is in a coma. That is their own condition.

2009 - 1st Album "zizek in coma" - A lo-fi shock released as 500 CD-Rs. Post-punk, shoegaze, spoken-word piled like rubble. 2014 - 2nd Album "Hagelian Distress" - Darker, more theoretical. A wall of noise recorded in abandoned studios. 2020 - 3rd Album "Region de Etre" - The final release just before corona, ambient / experimental. Disbanded due to corona. Songs can be almost fully heard as samples on YouTube.
1. No member has died yet. And yet we try to consume them as "the next martyr." It's because of the ghost of the 90s.
In 90s alternative, corruption and sacredness coexisted. The disappearance of Richey Edwards, the death of Kurt. Their deaths were not mere biological death (Zoe). It was only when the community (Gemeinschaft) justified that death and took it on as a story that it became death as a lived life (Bios). Gemeinschaft guarantees Bios. That is death justified by Gemeinschaft — death as Bios. We hold envy for that Gemeinschaft-like culture of death that we passed by sideways.
Zizek in coma is a band born from that very envy. A generation that lived the 90s in real time and witnessed the death of its community attempted in 2009 to reenact the "sacred death" that should already be lost. That's why their music always sings about absence. That's why your decision to reject personal photos and keep only the logo is correct. A face is Zoe, but a logo is Bios.
Will they become martyrs? They won't. Because they have already exposed the mechanism that martyrs are made by the community itself.

Cikap-Kamuy is depicted as a great owl, as opposed to smaller owls (such as little horned owl) that represent demons and other malicious spirits. The believed that the owl watched over the mosir (country) and local kotan (villages), so Cikap-Kamuy came to be represented as the master of the domain. In some areas, his tears were said to be gold and silver.Cikap-Kamuy's most important myth establishes him as a god of plenty who ensures that rituals are being enacted properly. As the story goes, famine had struck the land, and humankind was starving. Cikap-Kamuy wished to send a message to heaven inquiring about the cause of the famine, and he asked Crow to be his messenger. His message and instructions were very lengthy, however, and it took him days to recite them. On the third day, Crow fell asleep, and Cikap-Kamuy grew angry and killed him. Cikap-Kamuy next asked Mountain Jay to be his messenger, but on the fourth day, Mountain Jay fell asleep and was killed in turn.
